Can My Truck Tow an Enclosed Car Hauler? A Sarasota Checklist
Short answer: a half-ton pickup with a factory tow package and a working brake controller handles our 16-footers and most cars in the 20-footer. Put a 3,500 pound car in the 20-foot Diamond Cargo and the rig is over 7,000 pounds, which is where a three-quarter-ton gets more comfortable for heavy classics on long interstate runs.
A tow rating alone does not tell the whole story. You also need the right ball, a 7-pin plug that actually runs the trailer brakes, payload to spare for tongue weight, and a car parked far enough forward that the trailer tracks straight when a semi passes on I-75.
Use this checklist before you book and again before you pull out.
Tow rating versus what you will actually pull
Start with the sticker in your driver's door jamb and the owner's manual. You want two numbers: maximum trailer weight and payload. All three of our trailers are rated for 10,000 pounds gross, but with a car inside you will be well under that. What matters is the trailer's empty weight plus what you load into it.
| Trailer | Empty weight | GVWR | Built for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 Diamond Cargo 8.5 x 20 | about 3,600 lb | 10,000 lb | Full-size cars, race cars, non-running project cars, two-bedroom moves |
| 2025 Hook & Line 8.5 x 16 V-nose | about 3,300 lb | 10,000 lb | Smaller classics, sports cars, motorcycles |
| 2024 Haulmark Transport 8.5 x 16 | about 3,525 lb | 10,000 lb | Compact cars, motorcycles, side-by-sides, enclosed moving and equipment runs |
Run the math on your own car: trailer empty weight, plus your car's curb weight, plus straps and gear. A 3,500 pound car in the 20-footer puts the whole rig over 7,000 pounds. Compare that to your truck's maximum trailer weight and leave yourself margin, because a truck working at the top of its rating on a hot afternoon is not a comfortable drive. If you are close, use a 16-footer, bring a heavier truck, or check our tow guide before you book.
16 or 20 for your truck
- 16-footers (Hook & Line V-nose, Haulmark): about 3,300 to 3,525 lb empty. Sports cars, smaller classics, compacts, motorcycles, and side-by-sides. As a general rule, a half-ton with a tow package handles these.
- 20-footer (Diamond Cargo): about 3,600 lb empty, with a 10,000 lb winch for non-runners. Full-size cars, race cars, and two-bedroom moves. A half-ton with a tow package handles most cars in it; a three-quarter-ton is more comfortable for heavy classics on long interstate runs.
Receiver, ball, plug, and brake controller
The receiver under your bumper has its own rating label, and so do the ball mount and the ball. Read all three. The lowest number is your hitch limit no matter what the truck itself can pull.
The coupler on every trailer here takes a 2-5/16 inch ball, so read the size stamped on top of yours before you drive over. Pick a mount with enough rise or drop that the trailer rides level behind the truck; nose-high invites sway.
Lights and brakes run through the round 7-pin plug, not a flat 4-pin. The 7-pin only carries a brake signal if your truck has a controller sending one. Plenty of trucks come with the socket and no controller, so the lights work and the trailer brakes do nothing.
No brake controller, no trailer brakes. Every trailer here weighs more than 3,000 pounds empty and has electric brakes, so you need a working controller in the cab. Without one, your truck's brakes are stopping both vehicles alone, and a panic stop on I-75 gets long. Get the controller sorted and the gain set before you tow anything this heavy.
Tongue weight and loading order
Sway is usually a loading problem before it is a truck problem. General practice on a bumper-pull is about 60 percent of the load's weight ahead of the trailer axles. That forward bias puts weight on the ball, and every pound of tongue weight counts against your truck's payload, so check the door sticker for that number too.
Pull the car well forward so its weight sits ahead of the axles. On the Hook & Line you have 16 feet of flat floor before the V-nose to work with. Household loads follow the same rule: heavy and low up front, light in back.
Cross the straps front and rear, hooked to the frame or through the wheels, never to suspension arms or bumper covers. Drive a mile, pull over, and re-tighten. Straps always settle. Non-runner or low car? The 20-foot Diamond Cargo has a 10,000 pound winch and E-track with four straps, and low-profile racing ramps or a dolly are available on request. Ask when you book.
Wind, sway, and turning a 20-footer around town
An enclosed trailer 8.5 feet wide with 7 feet of headroom inside catches a lot of wind. Crosswinds and the bow wave of a passing semi shove it sideways, and speed is the multiplier. Slow down on I-75, let the trucks go by, and give yourself the same margin on the Skyway.
Around town, the 20-footer cuts inside your truck's path on every corner, so swing wide on rights and watch the tail swing out on lefts. Backing a long trailer is slower and more forgiving than backing a short one: hand at the bottom of the wheel, small inputs, and get out and look.
Before you leave the yard
Whether you pick up in person between 8 AM and 7 PM or use the contactless code we text when your rental starts, walk this list before you leave Arapaho Street.
- Coupler latched and pinned on the 2-5/16 ball. Crank the jack down until the truck's rear lifts to prove it is locked on.
- 7-pin plugged in; check running lights, both turn signals, and brake lights.
- Brake controller on and gain set. Do a slow test stop before you reach the road.
- Trailer level behind the truck.
- Tire pressure on all trailer tires and the spare. Every trailer carries a spare, tire aid, and an impact gun for a roadside change.
- Ramp door latched, jack all the way up, mirrors set to see the rear corners.
- Re-tighten the straps after the first mile.
